Hummingbird Sightings for Fall of 2024
|
Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico, and do not migrate. For example, in Honduras as many as 42 species of hummingbirds can be found, mostly year-round. And others further north, in areas like California and the upper Pacific coast, do not migrate.
However, some hummingbirds are migratory creatures, and migrate north in the warmer months to their breeding grounds in the United States and the Canadian provinces.
Then, by late summer and early fall, breeding is completed and the southward migration back to Mexico and Central America is underway.
Many of our website viewers are continuing to see hummingbirds as we move from late summer into early fall of 2024, and are reporting their migration sightings and stories of interest. Some viewers are seeing increasing numbers for now, others reporting their last sightings of the year.
Included here are a few of the recent hummingbird observations reported to this website, newest listed first.

| 08/19/2024 - Pella, IA Species: Rufous I was surprised to see a different colored hummingbird in my flowers in mid-morning. Took many photos and an Iowa bird expert identified it as a Rufous hummingbird. It must have just been passing through as I haven’t seen it since. |

| 08/19/2024 - Pocola, OK Species: Ruby-throated We had aproximately 10 new visitors for about 5 days. Then they left. |

| 08/18/2024 - Summit, AR Species: Ruby-throated I have over 50 that come to see me every year. Now that it's August I have a lot more. I fill 10 feeders every other day plus I planted flowers specifically for them. |

| 08/18/2024 - Berryton, KS Species: Rufous 90 percent certain I’ve had an immature male Rufous hummingbird hanging around my feeder the last two days. Orange tint towards end of wings and towards tail feathers as well as a spot of rust on the throat. |

| 08/16/2024 - Convers, GA Species: Ruby-throated Two arrived on 5/3/24 and we now on 8/16/24 have about 20 to 25 who visit every day. |

| 08/15/2024 - Coathurst, Alberta Species: Ruby-throated Female Ruby Throated Hummingbird I believe. Seem to get the birds consistently in August when the Gladiolus flower. |

| 08/10/2024 - Siler City, NC Species: Ruby-throated This time of the year there are several Ruby Throated Hummingbirds on my one Oak Tree. When the sun rises each morning, their red shows royally and oh-so brightly! They're are about 30 Hummingbirds both in the morning and evening right before torpur. I take my job as a caretaker of these little ones quite seriously! |

| 07/25/2024 - Farmville, VA Species: Ruby-throated We have seen 2 pied hummingbirds at our feeder for more than a week. One has more white and only a little green on end of wings. The other has more green. We have photos of the one with more green. They use the feeder the farthest from the house. |
