Hummingbird Sightings for Fall of 2024
|
Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico, and do not migrate. For example, in Honduras as many as 42 species of hummingbirds can be found, mostly year-round. And others further north, in areas like California and the upper Pacific coast, do not migrate.
However, some hummingbirds are migratory creatures, and migrate north in the warmer months to their breeding grounds in the United States and the Canadian provinces.
Then, by late summer and early fall, breeding is completed and the southward migration back to Mexico and Central America is underway.
Many of our website viewers are continuing to see hummingbirds as we move through the fall of 2024, and are reporting their migration sightings and stories of interest. Some viewers are seeing increasing numbers for now, others reporting their last sightings of the year.
Included here are a few of the recent hummingbird observations reported to this website, newest listed first.

| 09/24/2024 - Fort Wayne, IN Species: Ruby-throated I saw just 3 Ruby-throated hummers at my two feeders today. This is a dramatic drop in activity from just a week ago. I hate to see them leave. :( |

| 09/24/2024 - Wentzville, MO Species: Ruby-throated Saw one at the feeder at dusk. First one seen for about 10 days. |

| 09/24/2024 - Westminster, CO Species: Broad-tailed Saw one little girl at the feeders this morning. She sipped then hovered a few feet from me as if to say "Thanks", then she was gone. Feeders will remain up for any stragglers. |

| 09/24/2024 - Buffalo Grove, IL Species: Ruby-throated Haven't seen one in 4 days. Still have many flowers for them but I think they are gone. Missing them already. |

| 09/24/2024 - Gadsden, TN Species: Ruby-throated Still keeping out 9 feeders and have 20-40 hummingbirds from dawn till dusk. I usually keep 15-30 year round but planted a half acre pollinator garden this year and have had more than ever. Getting a cold front tomorrow and temps dropping to the 70’s, guessing that might be the end soon. Been a great hummingbird year for me! |

| 09/24/2024 - Gary, TX Species: Ruby-throated We had a few coming through but they got more numerous around the 14th. As of today 9/24/24, they have been pretty heavy daily, mornings and afternoons. |

| 09/24/2024 - Hudsonville., MI Species: Ruby-throated I haven't seen any for about a week. They mobbed the feeder the previous 2 weeks. |

| 09/24/2024 - Kings Mountain, NC Species: Ruby-throated We have had between 5 and 7 regulars all summer. We are now down to one female with an occasional male sighting. We had a female on our back feeder that always liked to perch in this one particular spot, but we have not seen her in a little over a week. It's slow around here, and I'm sad to say that I think most of our fluttering friends have moved on. I don't expect to see the little lady out front for much longer. |

| 09/23/2024 - Vero Beach, FL Species: Ruby-throated Hopefully, its the same bird I saw 2 weeks ago, then again last week, and everyday this week. So far, 5 times in the last 4 hours. As he was flying in to the feeder, he stopped momentarily in the sun. His throat was a beautiful reddish orange in the bright Florida sunlight. |

| 09/23/2024 - Laurel, MD Species: Ruby-throated We had a group of 3 hummingbirds visit our feeder throughout the summer many times every day with the last day of them being at the feeder on 9/15/2024. I did notice that for the week prior to that they were feeding more frequently than normal so I thought that they would be leaving soon. Compared to previous years, not only did they arrive earlier than usual in the spring, but they are leaving earlier than usual as well. |

| 09/22/2024 - Bernard, ME Species: Ruby-throated September 19th was the last day I saw hummers at my feeders. I had only two left. I haven’t seen any hummingbirds for two days. Will leave feeders out for a couple more weeks. |

| 09/22/2024 - Mattapoisett, MA Species: Ruby-throated On Friday the 13th my last traveler (so far) showed up and stayed until 9/16/2024. She was a teensy juvenile female, the males having departed the last week of August. She actually hovered about 2 feet from my face as if to say hello, thanks, and goodbye before she also headed south. She had a beautiful speckled throat and a tiny body, and she was very thirsty. No one has come through since, but I’ve got two feeders still up just in case. They light up my life. |

| 09/22/2024 - Resaca, GA Species: Ruby-throated Have kept 5 feeders going all summer- feeding 25-30 hummingbirds. Today we are down to 10-12 total. 4 years ago we kept 8 feeders going and hosted 56 hummingbirds. The cashiers at Costco asked if we were making moonshine! |

| 09/22/2024 - Ashland, AL Species: Ruby-throated I live near Cheaha State Park in Clay County. I've had a wave of hummingbirds arrive today after weeks of singles and at most pairs. They have been active at my feeder all day in groups of three, four and more. |

| 09/21/2024 - Riverhead, NY Species: Ruby-throated Hadn't seen any Ruby's for a few days and was missing them until I saw a zippy flyby outside. Lo and behold a juvenile female had a long drink at my feeders, as the cool evening air set in. She even perched for a while, looking plumped and ready for migration. Bittersweet time of year! |

There are fewer now, but today is the first day I've not seen some around. Usually they're around by the mid morning. I know it's a silly myth, but today was first day heard honking of Canadian geese overhead. Maybe that's a signal. |

| 09/18/2024 - Holden, MA Species: Ruby-throated Last hummingbird activity at feeder was on 9/12/2024. Regular/summer female residents last seen on 9/3/2024; males left a few weeks before that. Between 9/3/2024 and 9/12/2024 migrating females stopped at the flowers and feeders to eat. There were at least 3 to 4 visitors per day during that time. There was much less hummingbird activity this season (spring and summer) as compared to years prior; looking forward to there return in the spring. The first visitor in the spring was on 4/27/2024. |
