Hummingbird Sightings for Fall of 2024
|
Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico, and do not migrate. For example, in Honduras as many as 42 species of hummingbirds can be found, mostly year-round. And others further north, in areas like California and the upper Pacific coast, do not migrate.
However, some hummingbirds are migratory creatures, and migrate north in the warmer months to their breeding grounds in the United States and the Canadian provinces.
Then, by late summer and early fall, breeding is completed and the southward migration back to Mexico and Central America is underway.
Many of our website viewers are continuing to see hummingbirds as we move from late summer into early fall of 2024, and are reporting their migration sightings and stories of interest. Some viewers are seeing increasing numbers for now, others reporting their last sightings of the year.
Included here are a few of the recent hummingbird observations reported to this website, newest listed first.

| 09/03/2024 - Munhall, PA Species: Ruby-throated Our regular Ruby-Throated left about a week ago. We are experiencing many travelers migrating. Had an old fella and many small fluffy newbies. Today it has been slow, I am filling the feeders every other day. |

| 09/03/2024 - Herndon, VA Species: Ruby-throated Didn't have as many hummers at feeders this summer as usual, but over the past 2 weeks have had near-constant activity. Not a single sighting today -- temp drop in last 48 hours has moved them on their way South I think. |

| 09/03/2024 - Cullman, AL Species: Ruby-throated Today was the first day I noticed a big difference in my hummingbird visitors. For the past month I have had 6 large feeders that have to be filled every other day. They would stay full. Today there was maybe one eating on each feeder. Only one was male. I have only had two males this past week with the rest being female and juvenile. Last year (2023), my last observation was a male on October 19. I think it was also the first that arrived last year. I am always sad to see them go, but I will anxiously wait for their return. |

| 09/03/2024 - La Plata, MD Species: Ruby-throated Still have a couple mature male ruby- throated humming birds around my feeders. Several female and juvenile birds as well. Did have about 10 - 15 birds in my yard during the month of August. The most I have seen in my yard ever, I loved it. |

| 09/03/2024 - Bowmanville, Ontario Species: Ruby-throated Two Ruby-Throated hummingbirds spotted days apart, last one seen on September 3rd. Hummingbird was getting nectar from freshly bloomed Anise Hyssop wildflowers and then drank from the feeder. |

| 09/03/2024 - Wilmington, VT Species: Ruby-throated All my males left almost 2 weeks ago. Only 2-3 juvenile females are left. Last year my last sighting was Sept. 26 but I always leave 2 feeders up for 2 weeks afterwards, for migrators. Safe travels little ones! |

| 09/03/2024 - Kitty Hawk, NC Species: Ruby-throated Had 12-15 all summer. All the mature males are gone. A couple of mature females and a handful of juveniles left. Typically have 3-4 that winter over here, although a two week cold spell with temps that never got above the mid 20s a couple of years ago killed all of my winter guests. |

| 09/03/2024 - East Brookfield, MA Species: Ruby-throated Well looks like my male hummers have flown south last days of August, but still have a female this morning. Had three this season and at one point in mid-August I was counting 8 hummers!! They like the one near all my flowers that they can rest and perch on best!!!! See you in the spring my little friends!!!! |

| 09/02/2024 - Lake Zurich, IL Species: Ruby-throated A lot of hummingbird activity around plants and feeders right now. Have seen several males at the feeders this year for the first time. Several juveniles and of course our regulars. Hummingbird numbers have more than doubled at my place over the last 3 years. |

| 09/02/2024 - Carlisle, MA Species: Ruby-throated We put out 7 feeders and 2 weeks ago they were emptying the 1 cup feeders in a day. We think there were a lot of juveniles from this year. Feeding and sightings have slowed, so maybe they are starting to leave or maybe just eating flower nectar. We have 2 that love our nasturtiums, lantana, million bells and butterfly bush. We usually see the last one the 4th week in September. |

| 09/02/2024 - Stow, OH Species: Ruby-throated Feeders have been active this morning. Even had a pair of females stay and feed at the same time. Never had that happen - usually guarding and chasing others away. |
