Summer visitor to the mountains of the U.S. southwest. Rare in southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and Texas. Can also be found as far south as southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. |
Characteristics and Identification |
Has a distinctive red/orange bill with a black tip. Only hummingbird with a combination of a
long white stripe behind eye, red bill, and a violet crown. Square tail. Adult male has a dark purple crown and chin, green gorget. |
