| Characteristics and Identification A large hummingbird with a long bill, flat head and big tail. Male has a green throat and violet-blue, purple crown. Adult female has green upperparts, grayish underparts, and a white streak extending behind the eye. Also called Magnificent Hummingbird until 2017. Rivoli's is the second-largest hummingbird north of Mexico, with the Blue-throated Hummingbird being larger. It was named in honor of the Duke of Rivoli, an amateur ornithologist. | |
