Hummingbird Sightings for Fall of 2024

Fall 2024 Hummingbird Sightings
Ruby-throat Hummingbird Fall Migration

Many hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico, and do not migrate. For example, in Honduras as many as 42 species of hummingbirds can be found, mostly year-round. And others further north, in areas like California and the upper Pacific coast, do not migrate.

However, some hummingbirds are migratory creatures, and migrate north in the warmer months to their breeding grounds in the United States and the Canadian provinces.

Then, by late summer and early fall, breeding is completed and the southward migration back to Mexico and Central America is underway.

Many of our website viewers are continuing to see hummingbirds as we move through the fall of 2024, and are reporting their migration sightings and stories of interest. Some viewers are seeing increasing numbers for now, others reporting their last sightings of the year.

Included here are a few of the recent hummingbird observations reported to this website, newest listed first.

09/09/2024 - Normal, IL
Species: Ruby-throated
Females still coming to the feeder, one at a time.  As happens often, a very aggressive female just won the battle with a chickadee that was trying to drink water from the ant moat.
09/09/2024 - Palestine, TX
Species: Ruby-throated
We have seen about two dozen daily—feeding on trumpet flowers, zinnias, and cannas—for the past week. They are also draining the sugar nectar from our hummingbird feeder, which we have refilled every two-three days. Their dancing acrobatics are lovely and hypnotic!
09/09/2024 - Paducah, KY
Species: Ruby-throated
Literally dozens of males and females.  Going through nectar like crazy. Have to refill just about every single day.
09/09/2024 - Osceola, MO
Species: Ruby-throated
Down to only about 8 juvenile females left at front deck feeders from 30-35 last week. Weather has been colder.
09/09/2024 - Russell, PA
Species: Ruby-throated
I had one male a few days ago. Just a brief visit. Still have 2 females. It was 40° yesterday morning.  I'll miss them when they're gone.
09/09/2024 - Salt Lake City, UT
Species: Calliope and others
We have been seeing black-chinned, broad-tailed, rufous and a few calliope hummingbirds, but their numbers are dwindling this past week.

A male came by the garden about 1030am.
09/09/2024 - Sparta, NJ

Last day of any sighting.  Just females for the previous 2 weeks.  Bon voyage, little birds!  You are missed!
09/09/2024 - Shirley, NY
Species: Ruby-throated
She was with me all summer. Last sighting was today.
09/09/2024 - Elverson, PA
Species: Ruby-throated
We had really heavy activity this season. The males started to leave about a week or two ago. The females and juveniles fought hardcore over the mutliple feeders over the weekend. We get a few every spring and they and their offspring stay until September.  I realized today that it was quiet and I hadn’t heard the chirping/fighting since Monday. I’m sad. I hope they have a safe migration.
09/09/2024 - Cape Cod, MA
Species: Ruby-throated
Still seeing an occasional female or juvenile at the feeders but haven't seen any males for a couple of days. Safe travel My Little Friends!
09/09/2024 - Crawford, NY
Species: Ruby-throated
One female early morning at 46 degrees. Hopefully she stays a little longer.
09/09/2024 - Brooklyn, NY
Species: Ruby-throated
Saw one today! He’s been by several times this AM after I refreshed the feeder (he was by two days ago).
09/09/2024 - Fayette, AL
Species: Ruby-throated
We are having anywhere from 15 to 20 female ruby throated a day. Only seeing a couple of males each day. We are actually having more hummers than we did during the month of July. We have four feeders under our carport. They start hitting the feeders as soon as it gets light enough in the mornings. I’ll sure miss these little fellows when they leave. Most likely that will be soon. Temperature this morning was 58F.
09/09/2024 - Troy, NY
Species: Ruby-throated
One female still visiting regularly - the other three locals seem to have moved on. Had a much larger female visit two days ago. She came to the feeder several times throughout the early morning then disappeared. Very skittish so I'm assuming she was migrating through.
09/09/2024 - North Versailles, PA
Species: Ruby-throated
Still seeing a few of the sweet little things at our 3 feeders and on flowers in the garden.
09/09/2024 - Searcy, AR
Species: Ruby-throated
We have six that are very active morning and evening! Love to watch them!
09/09/2024 - Downingtown, PA
Species: Ruby-throated
Spotted two females this morning having breakfast at the flowers and feeder. Then that was it. No more all day, after seeing them constantly for weeks. Assume they are on their way south. Safe travels.
09/09/2024 - Queensbury, NY
Species: Ruby-throated
Ruby throated came to few petunias I have left. Did not use feeder so I assume just passing thru. Our regular group left two weeks ago.
09/09/2024 - Rome, GA
Species: Ruby-throated
Still have many female Ruby-throats at feeders. Males are sporadic. At peak season they were consuming over a gallon of sugar water per day. Now down to half a gallon per day.
09/08/2024 - Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Species: Ruby-throated
No hummingbirds for 2 days but today we have 2 females, very scrappy. Maybe just passing through as our regulars have left.
09/08/2024 - Framingham, MA
Species: Ruby-throated
Early departure, last hummingbird sighted on September 2 --  maybe due to this year's cold mornings? (Last year they stayed until  Oct. 1st!)  Will keep the feeders up until Nov. for late travelers.  I miss my two sweet hummers so much -- but heartfelt thanks to all you kind, caring souls along the Southern route in Mississippi, Texas, etc. for taking such good care of the little ones on their journey.
09/08/2024 - Tyler, TX
Species: Ruby-throated
Still seeing large numbers of migrating hummers today, though the "peak" may have been on 9/6 when the air was full of flying birds, and each feeder had 8-10 occupants!
09/08/2024 - Richland Springs, TX
Species: Ruby-throated
My feeders are flooded with hummers. I have three feeders and there may be as many as 15 birds fighting for food. This is more activity than most of the summer.

We still have 2 at our feeder everyday but know they will be leaving soon.

Past week has been crazy at our one feeder.  Been filling our feeder with 32 oz of sugar water daily.  Non stop activity all day!
09/08/2024 - Lyndhurst, Ontario
Species: Ruby-throated
I was happy to see 1 female arriving at a feeder this evening just as I was checking levels to see if it needed to be refilled. As my hummingbird and oriole feeders are visited by other birds (Red Bellied Woodpeckers and Chickadees), I will keep them filled in the hopes more hummers also stop by.
09/08/2024 - Rio Vista, TX

The hummingbirds who have been regularly visiting our feeder are gone. No sightings for several days.  Spotted one buzzing a cone flower then leaving without visiting feeder so assume it was migrating.
09/07/2024 - North Constantia, NY

09/07/2024 - Cranberry Township, PA
Species: Ruby-throated
Much aggression between females seen frequently at our feeder. Chittering and running each other off. They are getting chubby because they are drinking so much nectar. They will soon be departing, no doubt. We had a male about two days ago, but haven't seen him lately.
09/07/2024 - Val-des-Bois, Quebec
Species: Ruby-throated
I think my regulars left on the long weekend and the ones I am seeing today (and even yesterday) are just passing through. Their behaviour is different - a little more skittish when I get close to the window or move around inside the house.

Had a crazy influx of hummers today. Thinking it was a migrating group. Put out extra feeders because we couldn't keep up. Seeing lots of females and juveniles as well. Poor babies traveling on their own. Hope they have a safe journey.
09/06/2024 - Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia
